Abstract
Objective
Purpose:The objective of the current study was to determine whether a combination of tetracycline (TC) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) was equally effective in treating a variety of bacterial infections in patients with chronic bronchitis, acute sinusitis, and trachoma.
Methods:Sixty-four patients with chronic bronchitis were treated for a median duration of 6 weeks with a combination of tetracycline (TC), sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) with minocycline (BC) or an antibiotic combination of SMZ and SMX. The combination therapy was administered to all patients during a 7-day period and was followed by a period of therapy, although the duration of therapy was shorter in the group treated with the combination of SMZ and SMZ plus SMZ. There was no significant difference in the length of treatment between the groups. The incidence of adverse events was low (less than 2.5%) in the group treated with the combination therapy. The combination therapy was effective in treating bacterial infections in about 2% of patients. This is an important finding and should be considered in the clinical trials of other antibiotics.
Results:TC was equally effective as SMZ in preventing the development of bacterial infection in the patients with chronic bronchitis, acute sinusitis, and trachoma. The rate of death was significantly higher in the group treated with SMZ plus SMZ than in the groups treated with the combination therapy. The most common side effects were gastrointestinal and respiratory infections.
Conclusions:TC and SMZ are equally effective in treating bacterial infections in patients with chronic bronchitis, acute sinusitis, and trachoma.
Bacterial infections in chronic bronchitis: A comparison of treatment regimens for seven commonly prescribed antibioticsBackground:Doxycyclineis a broad-spectrum antibiotic with a wide range of antibacterial activity. It is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. The objective of the current study was to determine whether the combination therapy of tetracycline (TC) with sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) or minocycline (BC) with sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was equally effective in treating a variety of bacterial infections in patients with chronic bronchitis, acute sinusitis, and trachoma. Methods: Patients were included in the study if they had a diagnosis of chronic bronchitis, acute sinusitis, or trachoma, or a history of these conditions. The patients were randomly assigned to treatment regimens. The patients were evaluated for antibiotic efficacy using the Clinical Global Impressions (CGI) system and the Global Outcome Score (GSOS). Treatment regimens were evaluated for treatment failure and treatment duration, respectively. Treatment failure was defined as the failure to complete the study or the number of days on which there was a treatment failure. The study was approved by the institutional review boards of the University of California, San Francisco and the University of Washington and was performed in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. The authors have no conflicts of interest to disclose.

Give as directed by your veterinarian. Follow the instructions printed on the prescription label. Store doxycycline at room temperature. Be sure to complete the prescription to ensure a full recovery, even if your pet seems to be improving, unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Allow your pet access to plenty of water. Doxycycline can be given with or without food but should not be given with dairy products.
Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use in animals with a known sensitivity to doxycycline. Do not use in pregnant animals. Let your veterinarian know if your pet is on any other medications, as interactions with certain medicines can occur. Do not administer any calcium-containing medications, antacids, laxatives, or multivitamins within 2 hours of the last doxycycline dose. Notify your veterinarian if your animal suffers from kidney or liver disease. Doxycycline may increase skins sensitivity to sunlight. Store at room temperature. Store protected from light and moisture.
Allergic reactions and serious side effects are rare, but in the case of an allergic reaction or a serious side effect you should stop doxycycline treatment and seek veterinary attention. Some common signs of allergic reactions and serious side effects are hives, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, loss of appetite, or dark colored urine.
Should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
Doxycycline should not be used in animals allergic to it or other tetracycline antibiotics. Use with caution in animals with impaired liver or kidney function. Do not use in pregnant, nursing, or growing animals since this medication may cause slowing of bone growth and discoloration of teeth. Give antacids, vitamin and mineral combinations, iron, or Pepto-Bismol at least 1 hour before or 4 hours after giving doxycycline. Use caution when given with digoxin or warfarin. Doxycycline is not affected by food.

It is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections in dogs, including respiratory infections, skin infections, bone infections, and even upper and lower than normal gastro-intestinal infections. It is also used to treat urinary tract infections, and it can be used in both. Giving doxycycline does not protect the teeth from damage caused by it. Doxycycline can only be given with a veterinarian's prescription when an infection is not likely to be life-threatening. Additional infections, such as bone infections caused by doxycycline, may occur as a side effect.
Tetracyclines can cause various side effects. All of the following side effects are usually mild, but in some cases do not go away. bone infection, skin infections, penicillin-sensitive infections, and urinary tract infections may go away without any treatment if your veterinarian has prescribed them.
Doxycycline may also cause other side effects. Your veterinarian will be wary of side effects that last longer than 4 days, especially when you have been taking multiple medications. Side effects that usually do not need treatment are diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, Has your pet experience the appearance of urine or diarrhea? Limit use to no more than once in a day, but treat with caution. Monitor your pet for signs of kidney or liver problems. If your pet has had these side effects, he or she may need to take a different antibiotic or steroid, or he or she should stop using the antibiotic he or she has been taking.
In very large animals, giving antibiotic drugs with calcium or vitamin D may decrease skins sensitivity to sunlight. Carefully measure the dosage and monitor the skin for signs of skin reactions. Give doxycycline with food as directed by your veterinarian.
